my dad the discoverer
my dad always loved to discover new things everywhere he lived or traveled. i remember him visiting me in the Bay Area, where he would find restaurants and stores that i didn't even know about after living there for 4 years. he must have tried every single chinese restaurant in the neighborhood and knew which ones were the good ones, which were bad, which had nice waiters, which had nice decor.
on top of discovering stores and restaurants, he always somehow found a way to become friends with the random people that he met, even after only being in the town for a month. the owner of the restaurants would know him, of course the nurses at the dialysis center loved him, the old man who hung out at the park was friends with him, the people who worked at the bank called him by name too. it was so amusing to walk into a store and have people know who he was.
he was so happy just wandering around where-ever he happened to be, whether it be a big city or small suburb (even if it was a farm town in Kansas, i'm sure he would make friends!) and discover new stores, restaurant and people. and then he would come home and tell me and my mom (who were probably just waking up) about all the things he found and take us to the good places. now i guess we will need to discover things for ourselves...

Yes, he discovered so many things or persons for us. My friends Gloria and Elsa say forunately Tom kept in touch with us for you, otherwise you never contacted us and we would think you were missing. My clasmates reunion was always discovered by dadi and he took me to attend those reunions. He seemed worrying more than myself that I lost contact with my friends, classmates or family or relevant things. I remember one time I could not find something efecting Ama's house' selling, he tried so hard to call Hai-Fong (as usual, I did not have her phone# with me in NJ, but I knew dadi would find it and call for me.), even did not get response. Sometimes I analyze the difference between his family and my family, he seems from a warmer family and I from a cooler family. I remember I was a warmer person too when I was young, but somehow the warm feeling may be cut by my family's attitude, primarily from the non-appreciation responses after we did things for them, I guess. Even my warth for my family was cooled , but dadi still kept his warm passion and was always the one to contact them. When he was young, he has hot temper as well as agility. His temper has been cooled down after years of marriage, but he was still able to keep the warmth and momentum to contact and help my family persistently such as contributing $ toward Ama's purchase of house and later tedious things for the house, invitations for your wedding..etc. He actually showed his care for my family-another way of giving his warm love.
With Dadi's passion for and meeting with people. Sometimes he would be misunderstood or taken advantage. Remember he got the contact with that real estate agent who was originally trying to sell Ama's house and they email each other even when Dadi retuned to Taiwan. The final results as you know was this guy did not sell Ama's house but got Dadi to sign for selling our Short Hills house. When we cme to Short Hills finding the selling price was much too low(that was the time house price increased sharply, and this guy took advantage of dadi who is in Taiwan hence did not know the sharply incresing market), he won't let us to negotiate with buyer. Actually buyer never showed up to check house or sign the closing even this guy kept saying buyer would show up. Actually this agent was the one to show up, and Even attroney on our side who was found by this guy admitted the case is fishery but signed contract should not be brken, Attroney said he could sue him later. Remember, this attroney later retuned the money for suing hin to us. We could sue him by hiring another attroney, but dadi liked to forgive him. He felt life had more meaninful things to do.
Probably this kind of heart that dadi has made dadi go to heaven and bad guy like that agent will go to hell. This also reminds me the movie (ghost?)that dadi showed me two weeks before he passed away.
